For the Pre-Fall 2023 Dsquared2 collection, the Catens took a nostalgic journey, paying homage to the eclectic and vintage-inspired wardrobes of their early days. Their objective was to transform this sentiment into an effortlessly stylish fusion, described as an unconventional blend with a sophisticated demeanor. The ensembles embarked on an exploration of thrift store treasures spanning the 60s to the 80s, now reimagined as must-have pieces infused with the signature Dsquared2 flair.
The assembly showcased an array of coveted items, including sequined disco minidresses, flowing Stevie Nicks-style garments, crystal-studded distressed denims, and playful leopard-print onesies for her. These shared space with camouflage bikers, slinky 80s tracksuits, classic peacoats, and compact tweed jackets, forming a curated compilation of vintage finds.
The essence was carefully constructed, driven by personal adoration rather than a strict formula. To amplify the allure, robust black cowboy boots, some extending to thigh-height, injected a touch of ruggedness. Their fondness for vintage roots was grounded in uniqueness, historical context, and craftsmanship.
They amalgamated elements of retro athletic wear, American outdoorsiness, and enduring workwear classics. Varsity jackets, aviator shearlings, robust field jackets, military greatcoats, and mechanic jumpsuits coexisted with nods to Rod Stewart’s rock-and-roll glam. Leopard-printed blazers, slightly off-sized satin-lapel tuxedos, distressed denims with a sparkle finish, and sheer chiffon blouses layered a fresh spin on traditional outdoor aesthetics—signature features of Dsquared2.
Twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten began their fashion journey at Parson’s School of Design in New York City in 1984, eventually making their mark in Italy and founding their label, Dsquared2. The brand’s philosophy melds Canadian imagery, refined Italian tailoring, and playful allure, resulting in collections that seamlessly juxtapose sportiness and glamour, relaxation and extravagance, masculinity and femininity—a distinctive take on alternative luxury. With a presence in Milan and London, Dsquared2’s collections are proudly “Born in Canada, Made in Italy.”
